Infant dies in freak firecracker accident in Tamil Nadu

A man set fire to a cracker and it accidentally fell over the firecrackers kept for sale, injuring the children who were playing nearby. An infant succumbed to the injuries while two other children were injured.

Kallakurichi: A one-and-a-half-year-old infant died and two other children were injured in a firecracker blast in a shop in Kongarayapalayam village, Kallakurichi district.

An unidentified man burnt a firecracker on the street and it accidentally fell over the firecrackers kept in front of the shop, injuring the children who were playing near their father Krishna Sami's shop. Sami had kept firecrackers for sale in front of his grocery store.

The three children including Darshid, neighbour Palanivel's daughters Niveda, 7, and Varsha, 6, were rushed to Kallakurichi Government Hospital.

Later, Niveda and Varsha were shifted to a hospital in Salem and Darshid was shifted to Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) Hospital in Puducherry for further treatment. Darshid succumbed to his injuries Saturday night.

Varanjaram police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
