1. Nirmala Sitharaman to present budget today

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Budget in Parliament on Monday, February 1. The budget comes at a time when the country is facing a once-in-a-lifetime health crisis. Ms Sitharaman will have the unenviable task of managing the government's battered finances and ensuring a recovery in demand, in an economy facing its worst contraction since 1952.

2. Supreme Court to hear school fees case today

The Supreme Court on Monday restrained the government from taking any coercive action against private schools on fees as the court had posted the matter for hearing on February 1 clubbing all the petitions. Some of the private school managements had approached the Supreme Court challenging the high court order December 18 last year on school fees.

3. Mumbai local trains to open for public from today

The Maharashtra government on Friday decided to allow the general public to travel by the local trains in Mumbai from 1 February in fixed time slots.

The decision was taken after Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's review meeting on the issue of resumption of suburban train services, considered as the lifeline of Mumbai, for all members of the public.

4. Schools for class 9 and 10, PUC students to start from today in Karnataka

The Karnataka government has decided to hold full-day classes for students of class 9, 10, and first and second year Pre-University across the state from February 1. The announcement was made by Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar.

5. Lt-General Mohanty set to become army vice-chief today

Lieutenant General Chandi Prasad Mohanty will take over as the new vice-chief of Army staff on February 1. He is presently the Southern Army Commander and will be succeeding Lt General SK Saini on his superannuation.

6. Indian Coast Guard to celebrate 45th Raising Day today

The Ministry of Defence on Sunday informed that the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) will be celebrating its 45th Raising Day on February 1. According to an official release, the ICG has played a significant role in securing the Indian Coasts and enforcing regulations within the maritime zones of India.

7. Centre allows full occupancy in cinema halls from today

The central government has allowed full occupancy in cinema halls and multiplexes starting from February 1. In this regard, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a set of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for cinema halls and theatres to prevent the spread of the ongoing novel coronavirus.

8. Grievances Adalats at district level in Kerala from today

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that special Adalats will be conducted at the district level from February 1 to February 18 under the leadership of ministers to find a quick solution to the problems and grievances of the people.
