Heavy showers continue to drench Mumbai, Delhi; at least 7 killed

Heavy rains continue to throw life out of gear in various parts of the country. Normal life was hit at many places after the heavy downpour, with rains also slowing down the movement of vehicular traffic and disruption of local train services at many places including National Capital Delhi and Maharashtra.

Mumbai/Haryana: A 27-year-old man drowned at a railway underpass in south Delhi's Pul Prahladpur area while he was reportedly trying to take a selfie in the rains. It is being said that the man slipped and drowned as the area was waterlogged. There were several reports of water-logging since Monday morning. A DTC bus was also reported to have broken down at Kanjhawala Chowk, leading to traffic jams.

Heavy rains continue to throw life out of gear in various parts of the country. Normal life was hit at many places after the heavy downpour, with rains also slowing down the movement of vehicular traffic and disruption of local train services at many regions, including Delhi and Maharashtra. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted thunderstorms with light to moderate intensity rain over some parts of the national capital, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh for at least two hours on Tuesday morning. Severe waterlogging was also reported in Gurugram's Southern Peripheral Road (SPR).

Rain continues to lash Maharashtra

Five members of a family were killed on Monday after a boulder rolled down on their residence due to incessant rains in Thane city. Two children were rescued after the incident. All the deceased, including three minors, were from the same family. Seven people were feared drowned at separate places in Maharashtra. A man was washed away in Ganesh Ghat in Dombivali, while a 9-year-old boy was feared drowned in Mumbai's Mira Road. A 10-year-old boy also got swept away in a drain on Monday in Mira Road area. It also said water entered a godown in Mumbra where goats were kept for Bakri Eid celebrations, leading to the death of 15 animals while another 14 were saved.

Local train services on the Central Railway's slow line were suspended for about half an hour around 3 pm on Monday due to flooding on tracks between Kalwa and Mumbra stations in neighbouring Thane district. The services were restored on the slow corridor by 3.35 pm. According to civic officials, bus services of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) were running normal, except for a few places in the suburbs. The eastern suburbs of Mumbai recorded 90.65 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ended at 8 am on Monday, as compared to 48.88 mm rainfall in the island city and 51.89 mm rainfall in western suburbs, a BMC official said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded a 'red alert' for Mumbai and other districts in the Konkan region, predicting extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next 24 hours. Mumbai and its neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad have been witnessing heavy rains since the last couple of days. The torrential rains over the weekend claimed 30 lives in the metropolis.

Haryana

Incessant downpour in Haryana led to waterlogging and traffic jams at most places on Monday, while the body of a man was retrieved from a flooded underpass in Gurgaon. Three people died after a three-storey building in the Khawaspur area in Gurgaon collapsed amid heavy rains on Sunday night. Rains lashed many places, including Gurgaon, Jhajjar, Bahadurgarh, Kaithal, Faridabad, Rewari, Sonipat, Ambala, Bhiwani, Palwal, Fatehabad, Rohtak and Panchkula. The Union Territory of Chandigarh, which also received rains, recorded a high of 27.7 degrees Celsius, down six notches against normal limits. Punjab's Ludhiana and Patiala recorded respective maximums of 27.9 degrees Celsius and 27.3 degrees Celsius. Amritsar recorded a high of 31.6 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal limits while Bathinda's maximum settled at 34 degrees Celsius.

U'khand CM to hold meet to review situation due to rain

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will hold a meeting with senior officials and district magistrates to review the situation due to torrential rain and cloudburst incidents across the state on Tuesday. At least three members of a family were killed and four were reported missing after a cloudburst in Mando village in Uttarkashi district early on Monday and several houses were submerged by water.
