Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani tendered his resignation to Governor Acharya Devvrat's on Saturday. As Rupani went to meet the governor, he was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel and other cabinet ministers.
BJP organisation secretary Ratnakar and BJP state incharge Bhupendra Yadav were also seen with them.
Rupani spoke to media persons and announced his resignation without outlining any specific reason behind his decision
Rupani (65) was sworn in as chief minister – his second stint as CM - in December 2017. “I have resigned as chief minister of Gujarat,” Rupani told reporters after meeting Governor Acharya Devvrat and submitting his resignation.
“I was given the opportunity to serve the state for five years. I am ready to take on any new role that the party deems fit for me,” Rupani said. Legislative Assembly elections in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state are due next year.
With Rupani stepping down, the question now arises that who would be the next chief minister of Gujarat. According to sources, there are three front runners for the top post. Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, and Union Ministers Parshottam Rupala and Mansukh Mandaviya are all prominent Patidar leaders and lead the pack of probable contenders. The new CM is expected to take oath in a day or two, add sources.
