Girl dies after falling into drain while trying to save her brother in Hyderabad

GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi visited the spot and vented her ire at municipal officials for their negligence despite warning them several times. The Mayor consoled the bereaved family and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakhs.

Hyderabad: In a tragic incident, a girl fell into a drain and breathed her last. The incident took place at Kalasiguda in Secunderabad on Saturday. According to police, an 11-year-old girl Mounika daughter of Srinivas and Renuka, along with her younger brother Karthik, went to the grocery store to buy a packet of milk, as usual, today morning.

But, due to heavy rain, there was flood water on the road. There was a big hole in the cement-concrete slab covering the drain. While the two were walking without noticing this, the younger brother fell into the drain. Immediately, Mounika lifted her younger brother, but in the process, she fell into the drain.

After this, the girl's younger brother rushed home and told about the incident to his parents at home. They hurriedly came and searched there, but found no trace of the girl. After informing the local GHMC corporator and staff, DRF teams conducted a search operation. Finally, the child's body was found at a nala. Parents are in tears as their child, who had been living happily with her younger brother, is no more.

Based on the complaint of the parents, the police registered a case and are investigating. The relatives of the deceased alleged that the accident happened due to the negligence of the GHMC staff. GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi visited the spot and vented her ire at municipal officials for their negligence despite warning them several times. Taking the incident seriously, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Authority suspended two officers holding them responsible for their negligence. The GHMC issued orders suspending AE Tirumalaiah and work inspector Harikrishna. The GHMC Commissioner directed EE Indira to submit a comprehensive report on the incident within 10 days.
