Hyderabad: Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev has resigned from the party amid speculations that she would be joining the Mamata Banerjee-led All India Trinamool Congress. In a letter to Sonia Gandhi on Sunday, Sushmita, without mentioning the reason for her decision to quit, spoke about beginning a new chapter in her public life. The former Congress MP, who originally hails from Assam, had a 30-year-long association with the Indian National Congress. She had served as the chief of the Congress' women wing, the All India Mahila Congress. She is the daughter of Late Santosh Mohan Dev, a Congress stalwart and influential Bengali leader from Assam.

"I cherish my three-decade long association with the Indian National Congress. May I take this opportunity to thank the Party, all its leaders, members and workers who have been a part of my memorable journey," the former Congress MP mentioned in her letter.

Sushmita is scheduled to meet Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata today, reports said, adding that she might be made the face of the Trinamool in Assam on joining the party. Sushmita had been an MP from Assam's Silchar, which had been her father's bastion.

She was one among the Congress leaders whose Twitter handle was locked for having uploaded the images of the parents of a 9-yr-old girl, who was allegedly raped and murdered in Delhi recently.
