Five variants of Mucormycosis fungus found in Surat

Several patients with Mucormycosis infection have been found in Surat. Five variants of Mucormycosis—Rhizopus, Rhizomucor, Absidia, Syncephalastrum, and Saxenaea—were detected in Surat.

Surat: Several patients with Mucormycosis infection have been found in Surat. In Surat alone, five variants of Mucormycosis out of 200 different variants have been found. The five variants of Mucormycosis found in Surat are Rhizopus, Rhizomucor, Absidia, Syncephalastrum, and Saxenaea.

Kiran Hospital administrator and Microbiologist Dr Mehul Panchal said that people have been found infected with fungus in many parts of the country.

He added Mucoria is a white fungus and has over 200 different types. The doctor further added that the severity of the disease cannot be determined based on the colour of the fungus.
