Govt willing to continue talks with genuine farm unions; MSP will continue as it is: Tomar

As a standoff continues between the government and groups of protesting farmers over three new farm laws, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Tuesday said the Acts have been welcomed in various states across the country but the Centre is willing to continue its talks with "genuine farm unions" to find a solution with an open mind.

He also said that the Minimum Support Price (MSP), at which the government commits to procure the produce from farmers, is an administrative decision and it "will continue as it is".

Tomar's comments followed a meeting with members of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Kisan) from Uttar Pradesh, who submitted a memorandum to the minister with suggestions regarding the Farm Acts and the MSP.

Repeal and re-enact farm laws: Chidambaram

Amid the ongoing farmers' protest against the three farm laws enacted in September, former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said on Tuesday that it is "shocking " that even after 20 days of protests, the government is adamant, adding that it should repeal and re-enact the laws.

Chidambaram said, "It is shocking that even after 20 days of farmers' protests in the bitter winter of Delhi, the government continues to stick to its ‘no repeal' stand. It is obvious that any agreement between the farmers and the government will necessarily require a new Bill to be passed in the Parliament."

"The simple way forward is to repeal the present farm laws and re-enact a new law based on the agreement. Repeal and re-enactment are well known legislative tool and the government should climb down from its high horse and reach an agreement with the farmers quickly," Chidambaram said, adding that the Congress supports the farmers' stir.

The agitating farmers continue to occupy the borders of the national capital on the 20th day of their protest. While they are not talking to the Centre presently, the leaders of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha would be holding a meeting among themselves on Tuesday at the Singhu Border to decide their further strategy.

Farmers' protest resulting in daily loss of Rs 3,500 cr: Assocham

Industry body Assocham on Tuesday urged the Centre and farmers' organisations to resolve the impasse over the new agri laws, saying that the protests are inflicting a heavy blow to the economies of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and J&K.

"A daily loss of Rs 3,000-3,500 crore is resulting in the economies of the region from the value chain and transport disruption because of the protests," according to a rough estimate by the chamber.

On Monday, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) had said the farmer agitation has led to supply chain disruptions, which will impact the economy in the coming days and may impinge upon the ongoing recovery from the economic contraction due to COVID-19.

Assocham's Hiranandani observed that industries such as textiles, auto components, bicycles, sports goods which cater significantly to the export markets would not be able to fulfil their orders, ahead of Christmas, harming the industry's goodwill among the global buyers.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said in the last 20 days, trade and other activities of about Rs 5,000 crore have been affected in Delhi and its surrounding states.

According to an estimate, about 30 to 40 per cent of the goods coming to Delhi have been affected by the movement of farmers, which is adversely affecting the trade and other activities of Delhi and neighbouring states, the traders' body stated.

New Delhi: As road blockade continues in protest against the three new Farm laws, an umbrella body of farmers Monday apologised with "folded hands" to people for the inconvenience caused to them, but said they were carrying out the demonstration "out of compulsion".

Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, which is spearheading the protests at Delhi border points, distributed handbills in Hindi to commuters on the Jaipur-Delhi Highway near Haryana-Rajasthan borders, where hundreds of farmers have been camping, to convey their apology, and also reiterate their demand for legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP).

The Morcha also asserted in the pamphlets that the farmers do not want any "charity", but a fair price for their crops. They said they wanted to enter Delhi with this demand, and present their view to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"We are farmers. People also call us Anndata (food-providers). Prime Minister of the country says he has brought us the historic gift of three laws. We say this is not a gift but a punishment,"

"Please keep your gift with yourself. If you want to give us a gift, there should be a legal guarantee of fair price of our crops," read the pamphlets, distributed among people. The farmers also accused the Centre of "pretending" to be talking to them but not listening to their grievances.
