Srinagar: Militants escaped after a brief shootout with security forces at Haripora area in south Kashmir's Shopian district, reports said on Thursday. As per a police spokesman, an encounter was started in the area after a joint team of the police and the security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation on the basis of specific information about the presence of militants. As the security forces zeroed in on the suspected site, the hiding militants fired on them leading to an encounter. On Thursday, a local report quoting a police officer said that after the initial exchange of fire, no contact was established with the militants.
On searching the suspected area, no militants were found after which the operation was called off, the officer said. On Wednesday, two militants belonging to different organisations were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. In a joint operation launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir police, multiple joint mobile vehicle check posts were established in the general area of Awantipura in Pulwama based on the specific inputs about the presence of militants in the area.
