West Bengal Bypolls: Top BJP leader manhandled during last day of campaign

The BJP leadership alleged that the party's national vice president Dileep Ghosh was manhandled and heckled by the Trinamool Congress supporters during his campaign for the Bhabanipur by-elections on Monday. A scuffle broke out between the BJP and TMC supporters following this, and a BJP supporter received head injuries

Kolkata: Dileep Ghosh, BJP national vice president and Lok Sabha member from Midnapore, faced wrath of agitated Trinamool Congress (TMC) during his campaign for the Bhabanipur by-elections on Monday, the last day of the campaign for the bypolls.

The BJP leadership alleged that Ghosh was manhandled and heckled by the Trinamool Congress supporters. The matter created tension at the Jadubabur Bajar area in South Kolkata. On Monday, when Ghosh reached the area for the campaign, TMC supporters started agitating and shouting "Go Back" slogans. He was even stopped from moving ahead.

A scuffle broke out between the BJP and Trinamool Congress supporters following this, and a BJP supporter received head injuries. He was hospitalised.

Making an insensitive remark about the third gender Ghosh said," I can retaliate too." Ghosh who lost his cool was heard shouting towards the Trinamool Congress workers. His bodyguards were seen aiming their service pistols towards the agitated Trinamool Congress workers.

Giving his reactions on the development, the BJP's new state president in West Bengal, Sukanta Majumdar said the Trinamool Congress launched this attack out of fear of defeat. Reacting to his comment, state minister Firhad Hakim said out of fear of defeat BJP is resorting to such theatrics.

"In Bhabanipur BJP neither has any organisational strength nor any polling agent," he said.

The leader of opposition in the West Bengal assembly, Suvendu Adhikari is supposed to come to Bhabanipur to campaign on Monday and it is doubted that the Trinamool Congress will stop him from campaigning.
