New Delhi: The Delhi Police probe into the recent shootout of an 18-year-old hotel waiter has revealed that it was due to mistaken identity.

Using the CCTV footages obtained from the shop's immediate neighborhood, the police have arrested a class XII student for his alleged involvement in the murder along with his accomplice.

During the custodial interrogations, the suspect — a minor confessed to the killing and also revealed the role of Delhi's dreaded gangster Kapil Sangwan who is believed to be holed up in London.

Police said the kill order was issued by Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu against the restaurant owner after the latter refused to pay up his gang.

The assailant-duo came on a motorcycle to the eatery on Monday (Aug 23) night on the pretext of ordering food. A few minutes later, they picked up an altercation citing delay in food delivery and shot at the waiter — identified as Ghulam Sabir whose appearance was similar to that of the restaurant owner.

The minor who was arrested from Haryana also confessed that he received the kill order from Kapil Sangwan for a price of Rs 10 lakhs.

Kapil Sangwan had gained notoriety for running extortion rackets in South Delhi. He came out on parole about five years ago and has reportedly fled the Country. Kapil's brother Jyoti Sangwan, also a gangster, is now lodged in Tihar jail, and is also reportedly involved in the shootout.

"We will seek the custody of Jyoti Sangwan to ascertain their role," an investigation officer said, and added that they would take steps to extradite Kapil and his associate Sanju from London. The police are also on the lookout for the other assailant.

Sabir was killed on his first day at work. He was filling in for another employee who had gone on leave, according to the hotelier.
