New Delhi: Special cell of Delhi Police have arrested a banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) member from Zakir Nagar, an official said. Police said that the accused Abdullah was on the run for 19 years and was wanted for sedition and indulging in unlawful activities.
Pramod Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said, "ACP Antar Singh made a police team of two police officers Shiv Kumar and Karamvir Singh. The entire team was relentlessly working to nab Abdullah. We received the information that Abdullah would be coming to Zakir Nagar. We cordoned the area and arrested him."
Singh said Abdullah was an active member of SIMI and laid traps for Muslim youths to join the organisation.
"Seeing his active involvement in such activities, our team had installed a camera in Zakir Nagar to keep a tab on his movement. But in 2001, when there were several arrests of SIMI activists, Abdullah had escaped the police raid," he added.
In 2001, Delhi Police had arrested several activists of SIMI and also seized incriminating materials from the headquarters of the outfit in Jamia Nagar.
