Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala): The low-pressure formed in the southern part of the Arabian Sea will intensify in the next 24 hours and turn into cyclone 'Tauktae' by Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The cyclone will move in a north-westerly direction close to Kerala coast, it said.

The IMD has announced a red alert in three districts for Friday and five districts for Saturday. Red alert has been announced in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta districts for Friday and in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod and Malappuram districts on Saturday. The MeT department has also predicted heavy rainfall upto 204.4 mm in the districts where red alert has been announced.
A red alert has been announced for the next two days in Laksdweep as well.
