Over 2,300 railway employees and 1,500 Delhi police personnel test Covid positive

At least 2,300 employees of the Eastern Railway zone and 1,500 Delhi police personnel were infected with the coronavirus. This comes after a large number of daily wage earners working in various states returned to Bihar fearing lockdown. The exodus also led to a rise of infections among the railways' employees.

New Delhi/Patna: At least 2,300 employees of the Eastern Railway zone and 1,500 Delhi police personnel were infected by the coronavirus.

This comes after a large number of daily wage earners working in various states returned to Bihar fearing lockdown. The exodus also led to a rise of infections among the railways' employees.

Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Eastern Railway zone, Sanjay Kumar Prasad, said that the recent surge in the cases among employees was due to the rise in footfall of passengers at various railway stations in Bihar.

However, he affirmed that the operation will not be affected due to a sudden increase in infection among the employees. Notably, many of them have lost their lives while battling the deadly virus.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's data, Bihar has reported 7,392 new COVID-19 cases and 56 deaths in the past 24 hours.

A total of 9,000 Delhi police personnel tested covid positive

Since the pandemic had hit the country, the police personnel have been deployed as frontline workers to deal with the situation which leads to an enormous increase in infection among them. According to recent data, at least 9,000 police personnel were affected by the deadly virus including 1,500 infections reported in April this year.

The report also said that at least 37 personnel were lost their lives while battling the virus, out of which three of them were died in April this year. It is worth noting that over 90 percent of the Delhi police personnel have received the vaccine for the deadly virus.

On Wednesday, Delhi Police set up three Covid care centers at Shahdra, Rohini and PTS Dwarka for police personnel and their families. As per a statement from the Delhi Police, doctors in these facilities will be provided by GTB hospital, while nurses and paramedics from Hamdard Foundation will attend to patients.

Delhi adds 26,169 new COVID-19 cases

Delhi registered 26,169 new COVID-19 cases and 306 related deaths in the last 24 hours, as per the health bulletin updated on Thursday evening. A total of 77,208 tests, including 48,346 RT-PCR and 23,862 RAT, were done in the said period, thus showing a positivity rate of 36.24. 19,609 people also recovered from the disease, taking the total number of recoveries to 8,51,537. As of now, there are 91,618 active COVID-19 cases in the city while the death toll has mounted to 13,193. So far, 9,56,348 people have been infected with the virus in the national capital since the start of the pandemic.
