Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that experts believe that the wait for a COVID-19 vaccine will not be long and it may be ready in a few weeks, asserting the vaccination drive in India will begin as soon as scientists give the nod. In his remarks here at an all-party meeting held virtually, Modi said healthcare workers involved in treating COVID-19 patients, frontline workers, who include police personnel and municipal staff, and old people suffering from serious conditions would be inoculated on priority.

New Delhi: Addressing an all-party meeting on Covid vaccines delivery and distribution, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that state governments' advise will be sought on the matter as to who all will get the inoculation first, and urged political leaders to write in their suggestions.

"Experts believe that the vaccines will be ready in few weeks, and Indian scientist are very confident of developing them," Modi said.

Public health will be top priority for the government as pricing of the vaccines are concerned, he said adding that the vaccination process will start only after the experts give nod.

Delhi

With more than 85,000 tests for Covid-19 in a single day, the national capital conducted a record number of tests on Friday since the pandemic struck the city, as per the health bulletin issued by the Delhi government.

The capital city tested 85,003 samples in the last 24 hours, of which 4,067 returned positive. The city also reported 4,862 recoveries and 73 deaths in the same duration. The highest number of tests conducted till date pushed the positivity rate further down to 4.8 per cent, the government data showed.

Telangana

Telangana reported 631 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to over 2.72 lakh while two fatalities pushed the toll to 1,467, the state government said on Friday.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 109, followed by Medchal Malkajgiri (57) and Rangareddy (49), it said in a bulletin, providing details as of 8 PM on December 3.

As many as 8,826 patients are under treatment and 57,405 samples were tested on Thursday.

Karnataka

Karnataka reported 1,247 new COVID-19 cases and 13 related fatalities on Friday, taking the total number of infections to 8,90,360 and the toll to 11,834. The day also saw 877 patients getting discharged after recovery.

Bengaluru Urban topped the list of fresh infections, accounting for 620 cases. Cumulatively 8,90,360 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 11,834 deaths and 8,53,461 discharges, the health department said in a bulletin.

Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu on Friday reported 1,391 new COVID-19 cases, taking the overall infection count to 7,87,554 while 15 more fatalities pushed the toll to 11,762. As many as 1,426 people were discharged from healthcare facilities after getting cured, taking the aggregate to 7,64,854, a health department bulletin said.

The number of active cases in Tamil Nadu stood at 10,938. Two districts, including the State capital, logged cases in triple digits with Chennai adding 356 and Coimbatore 139, while the rest were scattered across other districts.

Chennai continued to top the list of cases with 2,16,867 infections out of more than 7.87 lakh in the state.
