New Delhi: Reiterating the demand to sack Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Mishra, Congress party organized nationwide agitation by observing 'maun vrat' or silent protest on Monday. Mishra's son has been accused and remanded to three-day police custody in Lakhimpur Kheri violence which triggered nationwide outrage. Indian Youth Congress members sat silently in front of Jantar Mantar in unison demanding punishment of the guilty at the earliest.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also reached Lucknow to take part in the protest.
In a statement released by IYC, President Srinivas BV stated, "It is happening for the first time in our country that the son of a Union Minister trampled the farmers with his car, but the ruling party is standing in his support. This has been done in a well-planned conspiracy so that an atmosphere of fear can be created among the farmers,"
He further added, "By supporting the accused, BJP has made it clear that it is an enemy of the farmers. BJP government should stop influencing the justice process. It is certain that as long as Ajay Mishra remains in his post, he can affect the justice of the farmers. That is why we are demanding the government to sack him immediately."
The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) members also observed 'maun vrat' at Raj Niwas in Delhi. Former Union Law Minister Ashwini Kumar, Former Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath and former MPs Ramesh Kumar and Udit Raj along with the members of Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress, including President Amrita Dhawan also participated in the protest. Various state units and frontal organizations of the Congress party sat in front of Union Government offices to observe 'maun vrat.'
