New Delhi: Amid the escalating tensions in northeastern states, Congress Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday hit out at the Centre and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hold a meeting with the Chief Ministers of these states with an aim to form a consensus to resolve the issues in these states.

While speaking to ETV Bharat, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said, "Hearing such news is quite disturbing. These states are on the border of India and any hostility in these parts leads to a vested interest across the border, to take advantage of it. It is very important that the Central Government changes the current climate in Northeast."

He also said that the Congress government, broke the image that the northeast is an area of insurgency and violence and brought about peace and economic reform, however, Prime Minister Modi only has fancy words.

Congress MP calls for a consensus on northeast dispute

For the last 7 to 8 months, there is just bad news from the Northeast and PM has not spoken a word on the same. Now, when there is a crisis, where there is a need for the government to be more serious, we are not listening anything from the PM.

This comes after a firing incident that took place recently on the Assam-Mizoram border.

Also, in other states, NSCN(I-M) refuses to accept the Nagaland governor R N Ravi as Centre's interlocutor claiming that the Modi government has signed an agreement with them for "shared sovereignty" outside the four corners of the Constitution of India.

When asked about the solution to this issue, Gogoi said, "First of all, the Prime Minister must call all Chief Ministers (of Northeastern states) to Delhi, sit with them, talk to them and understand where is the problem lies. Also, a consensus needs to be substantive. It need not be something on paper. We don't need fancy words, we need actual governance. But instead of good leadership, unfortunately, we are seeing mismanagement and over-dependence on optics and PR."

Congress party, on Wednesday, had launched a scathing attack on the Central government alleging that it was pushing the northeastern states into 'total chaos' and a complete breakdown of law and order.

Sharing his thoughts on Congress leader Sushmita Dev joining Trinamool Congress, Gogoi said, "She has taken a wrong step. She has made a mistake. At this time abandoning Sonia Gandhi, who entrusted her with so much responsibility, was not fair. She should have stood behind Sonia like a rock, but Sushma Dev chose to run for her personal gains, which is extremely unfortunate."
