Levelling corruption charges against Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa, the Congress party said that when India was fighting Covid-19, the Karnataka chief minister was allegedly more interested in extorting money for his relatives. The party also demanded his resignation over the matter.

New Delhi: Congress on Sunday released a video showing Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa's alleged involvement in corruption and demanded his resignation. This comes after allegations raised by a former Karnataka Pollution Control Board head that he was pressured to pay a bribe for his appointment.

Addressing a press conference, Congress leaders Dinesh Gundu Rao and Gourav Vallabh said that when India was fighting Covid-19, the Karnataka chief minister was allegedly more interested in extorting money for his relatives. "In the video, Dr M Sudheendra Rao, who was the chairman of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, is alleging that he was asked for a bribe of Rs 16 crore for the post, out of which he gave Rs 9.5 crore to a close relative of Chief Minister Yediyurappa," the said.

On December 30 2020, Dr M Sudheendra Rao was appointed by the Yediyurappa government as the chairman of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board. However, after four months the news of his resignation surfaced. Whereas Dr Rao said that his signature was fraudulently taken on a "green sheet" and later it was accepted by typing his resignation on it. In the video, Dr Rao is also seen saying that during his tenure of four months, CM Yediyurappa, his son and grandson took the bribe of at least 60 crores from the number of companies given to him for pollution clearance.

The Congress also alleged that Yediyurappa's younger son BY Vijayendra and some of his other close relatives also interfere in the affairs of the Karnataka government. Congress has also raised questions on the silence of the BJP top leadership on this whole episode and demanded a high-level committee to be constituted under the supervision of the Chief Justice of Karnataka to investigate the matter.
