New Delhi: As the Union Government has approved the reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) and Economically Backward Sections (EWS) in medical colleges, the Congress and DMK claim victory to their efforts saying that it was a long pending demand of the parties to implement the Supreme Court order.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Congress MP Manickam Tagore said, "They have done it under the directions of the court. They have been delaying it for more than two years. This has been the effort for all opposition parties, specially Congress President Sonia Gandhi. She had written a letter in 2020 asking Government to implement the court order."

He further added, "Rahul Gandhi ji has also been raising this issue because in NEET examinations, many seats have been lost and the crocodile tears of this Government is not going to help it. There should not have been so much delay in implementing the Supreme Court order."

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP TR Balu said to the media, "MK Stalin has been continuously demanding reservation for OBC, specially in medical courses for 50 percent but Government of India has given a reservation of 27 percent. However, this is the first victory in our long march. I think 50 percent reservation will also be done in near future."

The move of approval of reservation can be seen as an attempt of the Modi Government to reach out to the backward communities, especially in the election bound states. The Modi government has increased OBC quota of reservation to 27 percent and 10 percent for EWS for the undergraduate and post graduate programmes of medical and dental courses.

While addressing a press conference at Hubballi, on Friday, Congress' Chief spokesperson and General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala also alleged, "Had it not been for the contempt of court case field by Congress and DMK, Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not have bothered to implement the 27 percent Reservation for OBCs in the national quota of medical seats."

At the time of announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called it a 'landmark decision', saying that it will immensely help thousands of youth every year to get better opportunities and create a new paradigm of Social Justice in the country.
