New Delhi: Amid the skyrocketing fuel prices all across the country, the Indian National Congress has decided to hold a nationwide demonstration on June 11 demanding immediate rollback of the prices.

Congress members will assemble in front of petrol pumps in different parts of the country. However, strict instructions are being given to the party-state units to adhere to Covid-19 protocols and to avoid mass gatherings.

In a letter to all Pradesh Congress Committees and state in-charges, Congress General Secretary in-charge asserted that in many parts of the country, the price of petrol has breached the ₹100-mark as in the last 13 months, petrol and diesel prices have raised by ₹25.72 and ₹23.93 per litre amounting to total 43 hikes in just over five months of this year. "This is an example of excessive public loot facilitated by the Central Government," Congress alleged.

The letter further stated, "A symbolic but visible public campaign against the unchecked rise in petrol prices and its impact upon the people who are battling an unprecedented economic slowdown, widespread unemployment, wage reductions, job losses and high prices, should be done through the symbol of protests."

The Congress Working Committee members, senior leaders, MPs, MLAs, party functionaries in their respective districts are also being asked to take part in these protests.

Recently, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had also launched a scathing attack on the Central Government over this matter by tweeting, "The process of unlocking has started in many states. While paying bills at the petrol pump, you will see the rise in inflation by the Modi Government. The waves of tax collection epidemic are continuously coming."

Petrol and Diesel prices were increased again on Wednesday by 19 paise per litre each in Delhi, taking the prices to an all-time high of ₹95.56 per litre and ₹86.47 per litre respectively. Meanwhile, in Mumbai, petrol prices reached ₹101.76 per litre, while diesel ₹93.85 per litre.
