At least 2 dead, 48 injured after bus falls in deep gorge in J&K's Udhampur

The accident took place in Ramnagar tehsil of Udhampur district. The bus plunged into a 150 feet deep gorge.

Jammu (J&K): Two persons died and at least 48 others were injured, seven of them critically, in a road mishap at Majouri of Ramnagar area in Udhampur district on Thursday. An official said that a large-scale rescue operation was launched by police, officials from civil administration and locals at the site to reach out to the people boarding the ill-fated bus with registration number JK14D 5050.

"Forty-seven persons were rescued and taken to SDH Ramnagar for immediate medical attention”, the official said, adding two of them were declared as brought dead at the hospital. “Among the 48 injured persons, seven were taken to District Hospital Udhampur and the rest are undergoing treatment at SDH Ramnagar”, the official added.

SSP Ramnagar Pushminder Singh, who led a police party to the site has also confirmed the death of two persons in the accident. “We still are at the site to rule out chances of any person(s) being left unattended”, the official said. Earlier, officials said that the bus carrying a marriage party met with an accident in Majouri of Ramnagar area. J&K Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha has expressed deep pain over the loss of lives in the accident.

"Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to a tragic road accident in Ramnagar, Udhampur. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for speedy recovery of the injured. Directed district administration to ensure the best possible treatment to the injured,” the office of the LG tweeted.

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh expressed his sorrow over the incident. “Saddened to receive the news of road accident at Majodi, in Ramnagar area of district Udhampur. Just now spoke to DC, Krittika Jyotsna, she is keeping me constantly updated”, the Union Minister said in a tweet. In a subsequent tweet, Singh further said; “My condolences to bereaved families. All possible help being provided to the injured, those requiring to be referred for further treatment will be accordingly shifted.”
