New Delhi: Chairing the 13th BRICS summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the multi-national strategic platform has been key in voicing the interest of emerging economies of the world.
BRICS Counter-Terrorism Action Plan, cooperation among space agencies, alliance on Green Tourism and intra-BRICS trade were some of the focus areas Modi highlighted in his address at the summit.
"These initiatives will not just benefit our citizens but will keep BRICS contemporary in the future," Modi said.
"During India's leadership, we've received a lot of cooperation from all BRICS partner nations. In the last 1.5 decades, BRICS has achieved a lot. Today, we are an effective voice for the global economy that is recovering. Our platform has also been effective to bring attention to the needs of developing countries," he said.
Recently, the 1st BRICS digital health conference was organized with a vision to improve health access with help of technology. BRICS has also started several strong organizations such as the New Development Bank, Contingency Reserve Arrangement and Energy Research Cooperation Platform.
This is the second time Prime Minister Modi chaired the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) Summit. Earlier, he had chaired the Goa Summit in 2016. The Indian Chairship of BRICS this year coincides with the 15th anniversary of BRICS, as reflected in the theme for the summit.
The meeting will also be attended by India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, President of the New Development Bank Marcos Troyjo, the pro tempore chair of the BRICS Business Council, Onkar Kanwar and pro tempore Chair of the BRICS Women's Business Alliance, Sangita Reddy.
