New Delhi: After a shocking video showing at least 150 badly decomposed bodies of COVID-19 victims floating in river Ganges surfaced from Bihar's Buxar district, the Congress party expressed deep concern over the spread of COVID-19 in rural areas. It warned the government to "wake up" and take stringent measures.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said, "According to reports, at least 100 bodies have been found floating in river Ganges at Buxar. It is shocking as the district administration is saying that these bodies have coming floating all the way from Uttar Pradesh. We saw a few days back how bodies were found floating from UP's Hamirpur in river Yamuna."

"This only goes on to prove one thing that Corona has spread far and wide into India's rural areas where there is no testing, no appropriate treatment anf ofcourse vaccination is completely missing," she further added.

ETV Bharat had earlier reported that the bodies were perhaps immersed in the Ganges as part of the last rites. However, the drop in water levels may have left the bodies stranded along the banks. The incident was reported near Mahadev Ghat.

Shrinate asserted, "It is time that the governments wake up. A surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in rural areas will lead to a grave situation. It's time that our Prime Minister wakes up, does enough testing, treatment, tracking and of course vaccination."

After the issue came to the limelight, the district administration has initiated an inquiry.
