Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh): The Bharatiya Kisan Union, which has been protesting on the Delhi border for the for several months against three agricultural laws, is now preparing to open a front against the government in the UP elections. Speaking with ETV Bharat, BKIU national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait said that like in West Bengal, BKU will work against BJP in Uttar Pradesh as well. Tikiat, however, refuted the news of contesting the elections and said that Bharatiya Kisan Union will neither contest the elections nor support any other party, but as farmers are angry with the decisions of the government, they will definitely work to create an atmosphere against the government and the BJP with a special strategy.
On the participation of farmers in the assembly elections, Rakesh Tikait said that farmers are also voters. If they got any benefit from the policies of the government, its functioning, then they will vote for them again.However, if not, they will vote against the government. He also said that on September 5, Kisan Maha Panchayat will be organized in Muzaffarnagar under the banner of Kisan Morcha and an outline for the further movement will be prepared adding that the Mahapanchayat will be a historic one.

Farmers have been protesting on the different borders of the national capital since November 26 last year against the three newly enacted farm laws: Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. Farmer leaders and the Centre have held several rounds of talks but the impasse remains.
