New Delhi: The ruling Trinamool Congress scored an emphatic victory in West Bengal in the face of the stiff challenge posed by BJP with the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee leading the party to its third successive victory in assembly polls.
However, Mamata Banerjee was defeated in Nandigram by her former ministerial colleague and BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari. BJP, which had only three MLAs in the outgoing assembly, has won 75 seats and is leading on eight more. The party has major inroads in the state.
Following Banerjee's win, BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya on Sunday credited Mamata Banerjee for the TMC's astounding performance in Bengal elections and said his party would introspect the poll results.
He also congratulated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her party Trinamool Congress' win in the just-concluded Assembly polls.
"Congratulations to Mamata Banerjee but you instruct your workers to remain in discipline so that they do not harm our offices in the joy of victory. We contested the issue of development and we did not do any polarization," he said.
"We will stand with Mamata Banerjee when it will come to the development of the state but their party members should not attack us. We will extend all possible support to the West Bengal Government to fulfil people's aspirations," Vijayvargiya said.
Notably, Bengal witnessed a fierce contest between the ruling TMC and BJP across eight phases. The Samyukta Morcha comprising the Congress, Left parties and ISF has also tried to put up a strong fight. The BJP has made a concerted attempt to dislodge the TMC and has increased its vote share from the last assembly polls, leading on 75 more.
