BJP might get 1 out of 5 Muslim votes in Bengal, says expert

Speaking to ETV Bharat, political expert Desh Ratan Nigam said that it would be wrong to assume that the Bharatiya Janata Party is not getting Muslim votes in Bengal. He said that the abolition of Triple Talaq will go in the saffron party's favour which might help it in getting at least 1 out of 5 Muslim votes in the state.

New Delhi: Amid ongoing Assembly elections in West Bengal, political expert Desh Ratan Nigam said the abolition of Triple Talaq will go in Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) favour which might help the party in getting at least 1 out of 5 Muslim votes in the state.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, he said that the BJP will also get some Muslim women votes because of the Centre's Ujjawala Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) that have largely benefitted women.

"The data says that, under Mudra Yojana, at least 60 to 70% per cent of loans have been given to women. Similarly, under Ujjwala Yojana, gas connections have been provided to women. So, it would be wrong to assume that the BJP is not getting Muslim votes in Bengal," he asserted.

Nigam also said that Congress has no grounds in the state and it has amped up its campaigning in the last four phases just to ensure that the party's votes do not go in BJP's favour.

He further said that apart from Congress, Owaisi's AIMIM is also contesting the Bengal elections which also, in some way, might help the saffron party.
