New Delhi: The World Meteorological Organization appreciated India Meteorological Department for its "accurate and consistent" prediction of the Super Cyclonic Storm Amphan.
In a letter to IMD Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra, WMO Secretary-General E Manaenkova wrote, "I wish to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to India Meteorological Department and specially the RSMC Tropical Cyclone Centre, New Delhi, that provided its advisory Bulletin every three hours during the super cyclone Amphan."
He appreciated IMD's advisory bulletins provided to WMO, in particular for Bangladesh, for it's "accurate and consistent" forecasting information from Genesis until the demise of super cyclone Storm Amphan.
Amphan intensified into a super cyclonic storm in Bay of Bengal which hit Odisha and West Bengal coasts as an extremely severe cyclonic storm on May 20. It further moved towards Bangladesh coast.
"The accurate prediction of genesis, track, intensity, landfall point and time as well as associated adverse weather like storm surge, rainfall and wind by IMD/RSMC in New Delhi with a lead period of more than three days has immensely helped in their early response and actions," mentioned WMO in its letter.
It further stated, "The services provided by concerned members have been showcased as an excellent lesson and best practices in tropical cyclone forecasting and warning services and response actions leading to sufficient preparedness for mitigation of losses and damages."
The advisories of IMD were also distributed to the WMO Secretariat in Geneva and shared with WMO regional offices in Singapore, Bahrain and WHO coordination hub, informed Secretary-General E Manaenkova in the letter.
