West Bengal govt reintroduces Kolkata's iconic double-decker buses

Fifteen years after the iconic double-decker buses of Kolkata disappeared from the streets of Kolkata, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched two new open-roofed double-decker buses on Tuesday. However, the buses are not meant for regular transportation service and will be used primarily for the Durga Puja Parikrama. After Durga Puja the two double-decker buses will be used for city tours.

Kolkata: Two open-roofed double-decker buses was inaugurated today by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Nabanna. She said companies like Amazon and Flipkart have invested in the project. Provision for online booking of bus tickets will be initiated from October 22.

She further added that transportation will generate more employment in Bengal and there will be two buses a day on the city streets.

However, these buses will not be used for regular transportation service. Primarily, the buses will be used for the Durga Puja Parikrama. After Durga Puja, the two double-decker buses will be used for city tours.

The new buses are upgraded compared to the previous red coloured double-decker buses. The new buses have automatic doors, destination boards, panic buttons and CCTV cameras.

Each bus has a total of 51 seats including 16 seats on the upper deck.
