New Delhi: As consumers across the country feel the pinch of rising prices of onion, Congress on Friday sought a probe into the steep price hike.
Congress national spokesperson Gourav Vallabh attacked the union government and said that due to the negligence and connivance of the government, middlemen are active and they are the reason for the increase in the price of onions.
Vallabh said that when there was a hike in the price of onions during the UPA government, Modi during his one of his speeches mentioned onions as a thing that should be 'kept in a locker'.
"Now during his regime, the onions have not only disappeared from our plates, but we cannot afford to keep them in our lockers also," Vallabh said while taking jibe on PM.
He also mentioned that there is a huge difference between the wholesale and the retail rates of the onions.
Vallabh accused the union government of supporting the middlemen and said that the price hike is not at all benefitting the farmers.
According to the government, the steep increase in onion prices is due to the supply shortage. Onion prices have spiked in the last one month due to supply disruption from growing states like Maharashtra which has been affected by floods.
