As rescue operations are underway in the aftermath of the flash floods at Raini village in Tapovan area of Chamoli district in Uttarakhand, the state government on Wednesday said that at least 34 bodies have been recovered, while 206 people are still feared missing.

However, two employees of Rishi Ganga Power Corporation Ltd were later located near their residence after they had gone missing following the environmental catastrophe.
According to the government officials, the rescue operation is on to evacuate about 25 to 35 people, who are currently trapped inside a tunnel in the Tapovan region.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Force (ITBP) on Wednesday informed that the rescue operations continue at the Tapovan tunnel following glacier burst in Uttarakhand. 

"ITBP and other agencies are cutting the loose ends of pipes and wires inside the Tapovan tunnel as rescue operation continues. Tunnel authorities are also assisting in marking of the tunnel inside," tweeted ITBP. 

For boosting up the morale of ITBP jawans, ADG Western Command ITBP, M S Rawat visited 8th Battalion Gaucher, Uttarakhand today and appreciated the troops for rescue and relief operations.

Out of 32 bodies that have been recovered -- 8 have been identified while 24 are still unknown. The rescue teams have also recovered two Uttarakhand Police personnel bodies.

The body of one of the 34 workers from Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri district who had gone missing in Uttarakhand's Tapovan, was recovered, Nighasan Tehsildar Dharmendra Pandey said on Wednesday. 

Speaking to reporters Pandey said, "Out of the missing 34 labourers, the body of one was recovered and handed over to his family after postmortem. The deceased has been identified as Awadhesh who is a resident of Ichhnagar. Avdhesh had gone to Uttarakhand to work on the power project."

Personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and some state disaster response teams are clearing the tunnel that has been blocked with slush, debris and silt, and are inching closer towards the stuck workers.

After the overnight rescue operation, the team went inside the tunnel and inspected it, in which some vehicles are seen inside. In such a situation, the relief rescue team hopes that by late evening the debris from the tunnel will be cleared. It is being told that up to 120 meters of debris have been cleared inside the tunnel so far.

Hyderabad CSIR remote sensing device fails to find the inside view of Tapovan Tunnel

On Tuesday, the Central CSIR Lab (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) in Hyderabad had claimed that it can find the position inside the Tapovan Tunnel within a radius of 500 meters of the tunnel through a remote sensing device, however, could not succeed in it.

Talking to ETV Bharat, Uttarakhand Director General of Police Ashok Kumar said that CSIR Lab of Hyderabad had tried to collect information from Heli Aerial (aerial survey) on Tuesday to help in the rescue operation. But so far no information related to his report has been revealed. In such a situation, it is difficult to say how far the research, in this case, was successful. In spite of this, other teams including SDRF are engaged on a war level day and night to rescue people trapped in the tunnel.

Chamoli (Uttarakhand): As many as 32 bodies have been recovered so far from different areas hit by the glacier burst in Chamoli district, while 206 people including 25-35 persons stuck inside the Tapovan tunnel are missing, according to the State Government. 

The rescue operation at the 2.5 km long Tapovan tunnel in Chamoli continued on Tuesday night. The teams worked to remove slush and debris in the tunnel. Around 30 people are feared trapped inside.

Machines removed more slush from the tunnel the whole night. A joint team of ITBP, NDRF, SDRF and sister agencies entered the tunnel this morning.

The tunnel is still approachable till about 120 meters. More slush and water coming from inside the tunnel is making the way ahead difficult.

A meeting of all agencies including senior officials of ITBP, NDRF, Army and local administration has been called today to decide further course of action.

The police have issued a helpline number to provide information about bodies that have not been identified yet.

"People, who know someone who is missing, can contact DIG Law and Order on +91 7500016666, they will be sent photos of 24 bodies that are yet to be identified, on WhatsApp," police said.

A joint team of ITBP, NDRF, SDRF and other agencies conducting rescue operations used drone cameras to see feasibility to enter beyond cleared site inside Tapovan tunnel.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed the Lok Sabha that efforts are underway on a war footing to rescue those who are trapped in a tunnel after a glacier burst in Chamoli district.  

A glacial broke in the Tapovan-Reni area of Chamoli District of Uttarakhand on Sunday, which led to massive flooding in Dhauliganga and Alaknanda rivers and damaged houses and the nearby Rishiganga power project.
