New Delhi: In its bid to make Delhi and NCR pollution free, the Union Power Minister SK Singh on Wednesday said there would be a switch from petrol-diesel run vehicles to electric ones.
"This is the way forward. We have to start using electric vehicles to beat pollution," said Power Minister Singh.
Singh said that his ministry intends to maximise the generation of renewable and clean energy.
He said that more than 55 percent of installed power capacity will be renewable by 2030.
He was attending a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing programme between Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) to install electric vehicle charging station in the national capital.
EESL, under the ministry of power and SDMC will jointly work to fasttrack the adoption of e-mobility in Delhi uninstalling around 75 public charging stations in South Delhi area.
It is expected that with the increasing penetration of EVs, the local emission of pollutants is also expected to reduce, leading to cleaner air providing several health benefits.
"Electric Vehicles is the necessity of the day. And I believe that supporting infrastructure will surely enhance consumer confidence in electric vehicles in Delhi," said Delhi Lt Governor Anil Balaji.
In fact, the incumbent Narendra Modi Government is already making a push for electric vehicles.
According to an initial policy adopted by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, only electric two wheelers will be operated in the country by 2025.
The Ministry is also planning to run 1,000 electric buses on Delhi roads very soon.
