New Delhi: Even as the country witnessing widespread protests against the Centre's intention to produce a nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC), coupled with the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), BJP leader and Union Minister of State for Food Processing Rameswar Teli said a "true citizen" shouldn't oppose the exercise.

True citizen of India shouldn't oppose nationwide NRC: Rameswar Teli

"If it (NRC) can happen in Assam, why not in the rest of India? A handful of people are politicising the issue. But if you are a true citizen of this country you shouldn't oppose nationwide NRC," Teli told ETV Bharat.

On BJP leaders giving contradictory statements over the party's stand on nationwide NRC, Teli said, "After the Assam Accord was signed in 1985, NRC was imminent. The process to update the NRC began when the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government was in power in Assam. But, after a few members from the Muslim community began protesting against the move, the entire exercise was put on hold. It was only after the Supreme Court intervened that the exercise could be completed."

"So, our party had proposed that a nationwide NRC be produced, covering at least 20 percent of the area, to determine if any illegal Bangladeshi migrant has entered the country, but the appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court," said Teli.

When asked if he thinks that AAP is politicising the anti- CAA protests at Shaheen Bagh to gain votes in the assembly polls, Teli said, " Of course. AAP has kept the issue alive. I feel that the people sitting and protesting at Shaheen Bagh are unaware of CAA."

"When the CAB was passed in the Rajya Sabha, as many as 10,000 people attempted an attack on my house in Assam. When some of the attackers were caught, police asked them if they knew anything about CAA, the protesters failed to explain the law, " added Teli.

On BJP's prospects in the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls, Teli said, "BJP will definitely come to power in Delhi."

Body:"Many people don't know what is CAA. And a few political parties are taking advantage of their ignorance," claimed Teli while talking to ETV Bharat in an exclusive interview in New Delhi. Teli said that his house in Assam also came under attack by anti-CAA agitators. "As many as 10,000 people attacked my house...When I asked them what is CAA they were clueless," said Teli. Teli's house in Upper Assam's Duliajan town was attacked on December 11 during state wide stir against CAA. The police later arrested 18 persons for their suspected involvement in the incident. Ever since, CAB (Citizenship Amendment Bill) was passed by the Parliament and subsequently became an Act following assent of President Ramnath Kovind, anti-CAA agitators were demanding repeal of the Act. Under this Act, people from Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Christian, Parsi and Buddhist communities who have come to India till December 31, 2014 can claim Indian citizenship. Referring to the National Register of Citizen (NRC) Teli said that a nation wide NRC is also very much necessary. "When NRC can me done in Assm, it should be carried across India," said Teli. He said that NRC is necessary to identify illegal foreigners. Interestingly, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai told in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that till now, "There is no proposal to carry nation wide NRC." Teli was talking to ETV Bharat on the sideline of an election campaign in the national capital. He is one of the star campaigner for BJP in Delhi Assembly election. Delhi is going for poll on February 8.

Conclusion:"This time definitely BJP will form the government. There was no development in the rule of Aam Admi Party (AAP) for last five years," said Teli. Referring to Saheen Bagh agitation, Teli said that AAP is utilising this for their political benefit. "It is due to the present government of AAP that there is chaos in Saheen Bagh," said Teli. The Saheen Bagh agitation came to the limelight as it is a women-led stir against CAA and NRC. Saheen Bagh became a symbol of protest not only against the CAA but also the central government with international media paying special attention. end.
