Kolkata: Senior Trinamool Congress leader and minister Partha Chatterjee on Friday said the state government will punish those who assaulted the students of Jadavpur University and ransacked the campus on Thursday.

He also said Governor Jageep Dhankar, who had gone to the institute while Union minister Babul Supriyo was being heckled there, is expected to provide justice to the university's vice-chancellor, professors, students who were beaten up during and the after the minister's visit there.

"We must punish the culprits who assaulted the students including the girls of Jadavpur University and ransacked the campus," Chatterjee said.

Supriyo, a singer-turned BJP leader, was shown black flags and heckled by a section of Jadavpur University
students, who also stopped him from leaving the campus.

Supriyo was in the university to attend an event organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

The governor, who is the chancellor of the university, too faced demonstrations by the agitating students when he reached the campus to protect Supriyo.
