Kannur (Kerala): Art inspired by nature is always beautiful and fascinating. The experience becomes more enchanting when an artist carves out a masterpiece from nature.
Jishnu, a native of Kannur, now a budding artist turns simple leaves into art with the help of a blade and a pen.
He carves out images on leaves. He began working with leaves almost four years back. It was while studying in 10th grade that he learned about leaf art. He also carved images of public figures.
He uses leaves of the Banyan tree, Mahagony, Crepe Jasmine (Pinwheel flower) and Dwarf white orchid tree to carve images. But, his favourite is wild jackfruit tree leaf, as the images carved on this will last much longer.

"This is a job that needs to be done very carefully. The process takes a lot of time and work, and even just one mistake can destroy the leaf. A process is an act of patience," said Jishnu.
Naturally, fallen leaves are submerged in water and then dried. Leaf art is done by sketching on the leaf first and later making it into a stencil, carving out unwanted bits.
Most of his works were framed to keep them intact. Now there is a great demand for leaf art.
Jishnu, who is currently preparing for PSC exams, have done many smoke art also.
