Tamil Nadu central govt job seekers stare at uncertain future as state stops issuing EWS certificates

Candidates seeking to claim the EWS quota are required to submit an 'Income and Asset certificate' issued by their local revenue officer or tehsildar, but the AIADMK-led state government had recently issued orders to all the district collectors to make sure that the certificates were not issued.

New Delhi: With the Tamil Nadu government deciding to put a stop to the issuance of income and asset certificates under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota, over hundred central government job aspirants from the state, who recently cleared Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) examination under the newly introduced quota, are staring at an uncertain future.

Candidates seeking to claim this quota are required to submit an Income and Asset certificate issued by their local revenue officer or tehsildar, but the AIADMK-led state government had recently issued orders to all the district collectors to make sure that the certificates were not issued.

"Tamil Nadu government's recent decision to order all DCs to direct the Tahsildars not to issue Income and Asset Certificate has left around 100 students like me, who have cleared the IBPS exam, in the lurch. The union government should intervene in this matter," V Sudharshan, who has recently cleared the IBPS exam under the EWS quota told ETV Bharat.

On January 12, 2019, the Government of India enforced 10% reservation in government higher education institutions and employment opportunities for candidates from the general category with an annual family income of less than Rs 8 lakh per annum.

While the quota was mandatorily implemented across central government-run institutions and organisations, states, however, we're given a choice not to implement the quota if it deemed it unnecessary. Tamil Nadu is one among several states which chose not to implement the 10 per cent EWS quota in the state-run institutes following opposition from within the state.

While terming the state government's decision as "unconstitutional", state BJP spokesperson KT Raghavan said, "We know that the government has not taken a policy decision on implementing the EWS in the state reservation system. Why should it restrict central government job aspirants from getting the Income and Asset Certificate for EWS quota? EWS reservation bill was passed in the parliament and if the Government is denying the freedom of enjoying EWS quota, it is absolutely unconstitutional."
