Baramulla (Jammu and Kashmir): Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s hometown Duroo village in north Kashmir’s Sopore area boycotted the District Development Council (DDC) polls by recording meagre 0.09 per cent voting.

Duroo Village, which is Geelani’s hometown, recorded only 15 votes out of 1,600 registered voters.

A total of 15 candidates were in the fray in the second phase of the polls. 10 candidates were fighting for Sarpanch seat and five for Panch seat in Zaingeer belt.

The first phase of the DDC elections is being held in Jammu and Kashmir. This will be the first electoral exercise in Union Territory since the abrogation of Article 370.

These are also the first DDC elections because the UT didn't have the three-tier Panchayati Raj System before the abrogation of Article 370.

The election, for which 2,146 polling stations have been set up, will be held in eight phases and will go on till December 19. Counting of votes will take place on December 22.
