Surat: A recreational area out of recycled waste items

Surat Municipal Corporation becomes the first civic body to have created a recreational area by scientifically treating and rejuvenating solid waste materials. Scattered over 30 hectares of land at Khajod, the cost of this project is estimated to be Rs 100 crores.

Surat(Gujarat): Local residents of Surat identify Khajod site as a garbage dumping ground. But with the hard work and efforts of Surat Municipal Corporation, this garbage area has been beautifully transformed into a creative recreational area. Surat has turned the bulk of recycled garbage items into a recreational area, capturing tourists' attention and building awareness about recycling.

With this project, Surat Municipal Corporation becomes the first civic body to have created a recreational area by scientifically treating and rejuvenating solid waste materials. Not only this, the gas generated by the garbage is also harnessed to produce energy.

At present, this area use sixty sprinklers for irrigation and meets it's water requirement from sewage treatment plant. A mechanism has been put in place for the release of subsoil gas by the garbage.

According to Municipal corporation, garbage items were being dumped at Khajod since 2001. The garbage spread across 60 hectares was relocated to a 30 hectare site over which yellow soil was laid to create the garden. A compound wall has been erected around this garden.

Scattered over 30 hectares of land at Khajod, the cost of this project is estimated to be Rs 100 crores. Municipal staff have collected waste materials from 14 years on 6.12 lakh square metres of land to build the recreational area. This place is also in limelight due to the availiablity fertile soil which is used for vegetation. Municipial Corporation has also allocated 30 hectares of additional land for appropriate alternative usage. The body has also planned to open this garden for college and school students.
