Supreme Court Judges bid virtual adieu to Justice Deepak Gupta

Supreme Court Judge, Justice Deepak Gupta, retired today and the court for the first time in history bid farewell to an outgoing judge through video conferencing.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Bar Association on Wednesday organised a meeting through video conferencing to bid farewell to Justice Deepak Gupta.

According to reports, Supreme Court Judge, Justice Deepak Gupta, retired today and the court for the first time in history bid farewell to an outgoing judge through video conferencing. Various lawyers, judges, journalists attended his farewell through zoom app where Attorney General KK Venugopal and Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave praised Justice Gupta for his years in the bar.

"Today, as I hang up my robes after 42 years in the profession, I have enjoyed every moment of it. Though I end the relationship with the court, my relationship with Bar can and will never end," said Justice Deepak Gupta in his farewell speech.

Calling the constitution as the holy book of judges, Justice Gupta said that a judge has to forget his beliefs and decide only based on the constitution which is the "Bible, our Gita, our Quran, our Guru Granth Sahib, and other texts."

"I may have been an activist judge, but I have never crossed my boundaries. I knew my limitations," said Justice Gupta.

"The judges must see that the organs work within their limits. To be a good lawyer, you have to first be a good human being. You have to be sensitive to everyone's problems," suggested Justice Gupta.

"The bar needs to be humane and should not charge skyrocketing fees from their clients. Talking about the recent cases filed/heard during the lockdown. So, my request is for lawyers to not jump the gun and to think over it before approaching the court," said Gupta.

AG KK Venugopal praised the judge for dissent even as a sitting apex court judge.

"On dissent, you are the first judge to come out so strongly and openly which should give been said earlier. Your thoughts that citizen has a right to protest peacefully will never be forgotten. A very bold statement to make while holding office as an SC judge" said AG.

Justice Gupta thanked his parents for inculcating the habit of reading and giving him an elegant life by his mother after his father passed away.

Thanking his wife Justice Gupta said, "She has been a pillar of success for me. I thank her for the haircut she has given me so that I look presentable today."Recalling his days at Faculty of Law, Delhi University, Justice Gupta said that it was his greatest ambition to address the arguments someday in Delhi University."God has been very kind", said Justice Gupta concluding his speech.
