New Delhi: National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) will kick start business acumen at schools across the nation.

Over the past few decades, the business sector has created the highest percentage of jobs. Online retail, digital marketing, online accounting, taxation and financial technology has transformed the business sector. Many students are enrolling in commerce-related courses. About 40 to 50 per cent of undergraduates are opting for B.Com. During the last five years, the number of specialized commerce colleges has increased more in number.

However, in India, students have to wait until high school or intermediate to acquire entrepreneurship or accounting skills. Only those who studied CEC in intermediate and graduated in B.Com have an understanding of commerce. This means that students cannot grab numerous job opportunities until they complete higher education.

Until now, every student mandatorily studied six subjects till the completion of secondary school. Only in intermediate, students get to choose the subject of their choice. The present school curriculum is beneficial only for those who join science streams. The NEP 2020 decided to do away with 10+2 system of schooling. The schools will now have to introduce commerce as a subject from ninth grade onwards. If students get exposure to the basics of accounting and commerce at the school level, they can choose degree courses more prudently.

Mahatma Gandhi wished for an education that focused on the all-round development of the student. If commerce is taught early on in school, students can sharpen their entrepreneurship skills. Our country needs more job creators than job seekers.

At present, commerce students have more opportunities than others. Self-employment is another unique feature of the commerce-related courses. A commerce student can choose to work as an auditor, consultant, accountant, stock market analyst or merchant banker. Not just engineering and medicine; students will have a plethora of options.

The change should not be limited to introducing commerce as a subject alone. Communication and life skills must become a part of the curriculum. That way, students can quench their thirst for knowledge besides acquiring employability skills. With the right guidance, pupils can succeed at every stage of life.
