Socializing only way to prevent suicides: Psychiatrist

Eminent psychiatrist Devi Prasad Roychowdhury says positive thinking, listening to music, being involved in religious activities and reading can help a person fight depression.

Kolkata: Depression and suicidal thoughts can be battled if one shares their feelings and expressions with others, Devi Prasad Roychowdhury, a prominent psychiatrist in West Bengal has said.

"Everyone should we socially well connected, they should have friends, relatives or close people with whom they can share everything without any inhibition. This reduces the tendency to commit suicide," Roychowdury said.

A renowned doctor, Arunav Sengupta says, " Suicide is very much hereditary, there are many examples in the world of people who were absolutely strong yet they committed suicide. It is very important to share emotional exhaustion with others. Socialization is needed to keep suicide away. We tend to neglect mental illness like any other illness, mental illness needs to be prioritized."

Recently, West Bengal ranked third in terms of highest suicide cases. Asansol city, however, ranks second across the country with the highest number of suicides every year. Roychowdhury said, "Many factories have closed in this industrial area. As a result, unemployment is a big issue nowadays. People have chosen to commit suicide due to economic hardship. There are many more reasons for suicide, elderly people are also committing suicides, loneliness can be cited as one of the main reasons."

She further added that positive thinking, listening to music, being involved in religious activities and reading can help a person fight depression.

"Students are choosing to commit suicide after failing in a competitive exam. There should be proper education to take failures as a guiding light. The 'never give up' spirit should be inculcated," Sruja Banerjee, a student of Asansol Engineering College said.
