Hyderabad: In order to celebrate the formation day of the Asian Pacific Coconut Community (APCC), September 2nd is celebrated as the World Coconut Day.
APCC is an inter-governmental organization that consists of 18 member countries that are mandated to promote, coordinate, and harmonize coconut developmental activities of the Asian Pacific region.
Several major coconut-growing countries, including India, are members of the APCC. It is headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The main aim of observing the day is to spread the importance of coconut among everyone and exploring the ways in which coconut could be a treated as a medium to fight poverty promoting the development of the coconut industries and encouraging investments in them. The theme for last year was titled 'Coconut for wellness'. The celebrations were held at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in Odisha, India.

Coconut Production in the World
Coconut is a popular plantation and is grown in more than 90 countries worldwide. Though it is quite difficult to establish a coconut plantation but once it is done, it proves to be quite beneficial as coconut is harvested throughout the year. The world production of coconut sums up to around 55 million tonnes annually. Indonesia and Philippines are the major producers of coconut fruits in the world.

Exports by Country : Indonesia was the largest exporter of coconuts in the world, with the volume of exports amounting to 290K tonnes, which was near 52% of total exports in 2018. Thailand (70K tonnes) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Viet Nam (57K tonnes). All these countries together held near 23% share of total exports. The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (23K tonnes), Malaysia (19K tonnes), the Netherlands (16K tonnes), Mexico (14K tonnes), Guyana (12K tonnes) and India (11K tonnes) - together made up 17% of total exports
Imports by Country:
Thailand (210K tonnes) and Malaysia (199K tonnes) were the largest importers of coconuts in 2018, reaching approx. 31% and 30% of total imports, respectively. China (60K tonnes) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9% share, followed by the U.S. (5.7%). The United Arab Emirates (27K tonnes), the Netherlands (19K tonnes) and Singapore (11K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Indian scenario: India is leading in coconut production and productivity and occupies the third position in the area under coconut among the major coconut producing countries of the world. The annual coconut production is 2395 crore from 20.82 lakh hectare and the productivity is 11505 coconuts/hectare. Coconut contributes to about Rs.27900 crore to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In the year 2016-17, coconut products worth of Rs.2084 crore were exported. More than one crore population depends on coconut cultivation for their livelihood.
