New Delhi: The Supreme Court bench led by the Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde, sought access to Fibre optic networks from the central government today for better video conferencing facilities and exchange of data.
The court was hearing a suo moto case on the functioning of courts through virtual hearings during the coronavirus pandemic.
During the hearing the CJI asked the Attorney General of India, KK Venugopal, to arrange a meeting of NIC and law ministry to take a decision on fibre optic for hearings. In the northeast, there is no fibre optic network so the CJI suggested satellites for the region. CJI said that they will pay rent for the network.
Reliance Jio's advocate Harish Salve told the court that they have the best fibre optical network responding to which the court asked him to get in touch with the e-committee.
The court discussed various measures to facilitate virtual hearing for all the courts in India. CJI proposed to AG saying that HCs should be allowed to frame their own rules for video conferencing as infrastructure or equipment differs from court to court.
In its last hearing the court had ordered that all the measures which are taken to reduce the overcrowding in premises will be lawful. The matter will be heard again after Diwali.
