New Delhi: Bidding farewell to the outgoing judge, Justice Deepak Gupta, judges and lawyers recalled their time with him during his tenure in the Supreme Court and admired him for his liberal views, various order on environment-related and POCSO cases.
Justice DY Chandrachud remarked that in spite of spending a long time in the legal practice or judiciary, Justice Gupta has not diluted his open-minded speech. "Justice Gupta never became a stuffy judge and always came as a breath of fresh air," said Justice Chandrachud.
Senior Advocate Mukul Rohtagi said, "It is always said that a judge is remembered by his judgements which is true. But a judge is also remembered by the Bar because of his conduct. If the conduct is good, lawyers will always tell their juniors about such a judge."
Justice Gupta addressing the lawyers and the judges, said that junior lawyers should be given more chance to argue so that they don't feel Justice is denied to their clients and they should also be ready to with the facts even when they are not prepared with the laws.
Calling Justice DY Chandrachud his "coffee buddy", Justice Gupta recalled his times when in last three years, not a single day went by when the two judges did not meet up for a cup of coffee in judges' chambers at 10 am besides the Thursday lunches.
Ending the web farewell, the judges and the lawyers wished Justice Gupta for his birthday today.
