New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to put a stay on Presidential order of 2019 which had amended the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) and had declined Inner Line Permit (ILP) to Assam. But it has sought reply from the centre over the petition filed by the Assam Student unions.
The All Tai Ahom Students' Union and Assam Jatiya Tabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad, had moved to Supreme Court against the amendment of BEFR of 1873. It alleged that the amendment was a politically motivated step and Assam has been denied ILP to insulate it against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.
ILP regulates Indians from visiting the place. Its basically a permission which has to be sought in order to enter states of Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram have ILP.
The students seek ILP's implementation in the entire state to prevent it from CAA which would make Bangladeshis vulnerable there.
