SC directs foreign Tablighi Jamaat members to approach Centre for repatriation

The Supreme Court pronounced its order in the controversial Tablighi Jamaat congregation case. The foreigners were directed to approach the Central government for repatriation.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today directed the foreign Tablighi Jamaat members who were detained for attending Tablighi Jamaat congregation to approach the government to get permission to return to their countries.

A bench led by Justice A M Khanwilkar was hearing pleas filed by foreigners who had challenged the detention. They were blacklisted by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The court stated that the government should resolve the petitioner's issue within four days after they approach the Union government. The order also enforced expeditious disposal of revision pleas filed once the conditions are fulfilled and in compliance with Centre's requirements.

Out of 44 foreigners,8 foreigners who did not opt for plea bargaining were discharged by the trial court. Foreigners who opted for plea bargaining were anyway free to return after signing an undertaking and others also have been discharged under section 14 of the Foreigners' Act.
