New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday passed an order directing the Indian Union Government to make the appointments of judicial members in the Armed forces tribunal within a month.

The matter was heard by the bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde, Justices Subash Reddy and AS Bopanna.

The SC had initiated a suo-moto cognisance in this matter as judiciary officers of Armed Forces Tribunal are retiring on July 22, 23 and August 31.

Advocate Manglik pointed out the retirement and said that there will a huge number of the vacant posts after August.

The CJI held that he is inclined to extend the tenure of officers for the next three months.

However, Attorney General for India (AG) K. K. Venugopal said that it is a complex process and there are some issues in the appointment.

Though bench had taken the contentions of AG into cognisance, it pulled up the AG saying that the court cannot direct the Centre every time to make appointments.

The bench ordered the Centre to make appointments for judiciary members of Armed Force Tribunal in a month. The CJI asked the Centre to comply with the order.
