SC allows MCI's plea to extend admission date for medical courses

The apex court bench comprising of Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice Navin Sinha and Justice BR Gavai allowed plea filed by Medical Council of India seeking an extension of time to conduct inspections of medical colleges, admission, counselling of students, and to grant permission letters for medical colleges to run.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday allowed plea filed by Medical Council of India (MCI) seeking an extension of time to conduct inspections of medical colleges, admission, counselling of students, and to grant permission letters for medical colleges to run.

The case was heard by the bench comprising of Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice Navin Sinha and Justice BR Gavai.

Amid coronavirus-induced lockdown since March 25, there have been many disruptions in the regulations regarding medical education timelines within which certain procedures and courses like MBBS have to be completed.

The timelines could not be adhered with due to the lockdown and therefore MCI had moved to the top court seeking relaxations in last dates.

It sought extension in dates for Letter of Permission(LOP) for MBBS from May 31 to August 31, LOP for super speciality courses from May 31 to July 15 and admission in PG courses from May 31 to July 31.
