Sasikala unlikely to be released any time soon: Jail officials

After the BJP spokesperson Aseervatham Achary on Thursday tweeted that Sasikala will be released on August 14 this year, the jail officials have clarified that her release date is not anytime soon.

Banglore( Karnataka): Former AIADMK leader VK Sasikala who is serving a sentence may not be released from Bengaluru Central Prison any time soon, an official of Parappana Agrahara (Central Jail) told ETV Bharat.

The clarification comes after BJP spokesperson Aseervatham Achary on Thursday tweeted that Sasikala will be released on August 14 this year.

Sasikala along with her her sister-in-law J. Ilavarasi and her nephew V.N. Sudhakaran were jailed on charges of illegal property acquisition. They were jailed in February 2017, after the Supreme Court overruled the Karnataka High Court’s judgment acquitting former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, Sasikala, Ilavarasi and Sudhakaran in the Rs 66 crore disproportionate assets case.

When will Sasikala be released?

Prison department said they generally have a list of inmates who are due for release in the next 30 days, and Sasikala’s name is not on the list yet.

Sasikala's sentence is not yet complete. On the other hand, the jail officials say they are unable to release her on account of good behaviour following her bad behaviour in the jail.

Earlier it was being said that the trio may be released early however, the Prison officials have clarified that Sasikala can be released if IG grants a special remission then a review can be made following which she may be released later in August.

How is Sasikala being treated now in jail? :

Sasikala who was earlier being treated as a special inmate as a separate kitchen was kept for her in the jail , in violation of the jail rules is now being treated as a general prisoner. It was done after the issue was unfolded by senior IPS officer, D.Roopa.
