New Delhi: In response to the allegations related to the farmers' movement, the Bharatiya Janata Party lambasted the opposition parties on Monday.
Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad launched an attack on the opposition, accusing the opposition of double standards in recognising the recently enacted farm laws. He alleged that the opposition parties supported the Farm Acts during UPA I, adding "now they are trying to confuse farmers."
He added that while the government is trying to clear farmers' doubts regarding the farm acts, the opposition parties have 'jumped into the talks' and are trying to provoke the agitators.
Training guns on Congress, Prasad said it is indulging in agitations against the government to help save its political existence which has been at loss after a series of election losses. Further, he alleged that Congress announced the abolishment of Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) (APMR) Act in its election manifesto in 2019.
The Minister recalled the time when NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, the union minister for agriculture and consumer affairs, wrote letters to the chief ministers of the States underlining the importance of bringing reforms in the Mandi Act. Questioning the double standards of the opposition, he said Pawar's proposal in 2005 was supported by all opposition parties including Rashtriya Janata Dal, CPI and Samajwadi Party.
Speaking about celebrities returning national awards, he said it is their right to accept or return the recognitions. However, the law minister added that nothing can be done 'if some people are doing it for fame."
