Rains lash parts of MP, IMD issues red alert for 6 districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert of extremely heavy rainfall in six districts of Madhya Pradesh, even as the downpour continued in several parts of the state on Friday.
As per the alert, which will be valid till Saturday morning, extremely heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places in Hoshangabad, Jabalpur, Betul, Narsinghpur, Seoni and Harda districts.
Apart from this, the IMD also issued an orange alert of very heavy rainfall at isolated places in 12 districts, including Vidisha, Ujjain, Chhindwara and Panna.

Moreover, the department issued a yellow alert of heavy rainfall at few places in 16 other districts of the state, including Bhopal, Rewa, Satna and Shivpuri.
All three alerts are valid till Saturday morning, it was stated.

Nearly 83 lakh affected in 16 flood-hit districts of Bihar

The flood situation in Bihar remained grim on Friday with an additional 1.13 lakh people bearing the brunt in 16 districts in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of affected people to 82.92 lakh, Disaster Management Department bulletin said. Flood-related deaths remained unchanged at 27, the bulletin said.

As many as 82,92,464 people have been affected by the deluge in 1,322 panchayats of 130 blocks since Thursday. Additional five panchayat areas faced flood fury in the past 24 hours while the number of blocks and districts remained the same at 130 and 16 respectively. Till Thursday, 81,79, 257 people were impacted by the calamity.
Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur remained the two most affected districts where the number of people hit by the deluge has increased. The number of sufferers has also risen in Gopalganj district. Of the 27 deaths, Darbhanga district reported 11, followed by six in Muzaffarpur, four in West Champaran and two each in Saran, Siwan and Khagaria.
Over 5,000 people are staying in six relief centres, the bulletin said.

Uttar Pradesh receives light to moderate rain

Light to moderate rain and thundershowers occurred at many places over west Uttar Pradesh and a few places over the east part of the state in the last 24 hours, the Meteorological Department said.
Heavy rain lashed isolated places over western districts and thunderstorm accompanied by lightning occurred at isolated places over the state.
Bijnore recorded 11 mm rainfall, Mawana in Meerut 8 mm each, Saharanpur and Moradabad's Thakurdwara 7 mm and Amoroha 5 mm.

The weatherman has forecast rain and thundershowers accompanied by lightning at many places over east Uttar Pradesh and a few places over western districts on Saturday.

Three of family killed, rain blocks several roads in Uttarakhand

A man and his two children were buried alive when their house collapsed following rains in Pithoragarh district on Friday, an official said. Intermittent rains lashed various parts of Uttarakhand blocking several roads including those leading to the Himalayan temples.

The old house collapsed following showers at around 3 am in Chaisar village of Pithoragarh district, killing its owner Kushal Nath, his four-year-old son Dhananjay and two-year-old daughter Nikita, besides leaving his wife injured, Pithoragarh District Magistrate, VK Jogdande, said. The 27-year-old Nath had recently bought the house, the DM said.
SDRF and police personnel have extricated the bodies from the rubble of the house and rescued Nath's wife, Jogdande said.

Over 130 roads shut for traffic as rains lash parts of Gujarat

As many as 131 roads in Gujarat, including a national highway and seven state highways, were shut for traffic as rains continued to lash several parts of the state on Friday, officials said. With the formation of a low-pressure area, some parts of the state are likely to get heavy to very heavy rainfall on Saturday and Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Incessant rainfall since Friday morning resulted in water-logging in several parts of the state. A release issued by the state government said that moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded in Kutch, north and south Gujarat regions on Friday.

Umergam taluka of Valsad district received 132 mm of rain between 6 am and 2 pm, followed by Mehsana taluka of Mehsana district (95 mm), Lakhpat taluka of Kutch district (90 mm), Kadi of Mehsana(82 mm), Jalalpore of Navsari (76 mm) and Dediapada of Narmada district (68 mm), it said.

As a result, 131 roads in the state- a national highway in Kutch and seven state highways- one each in Kutch, Anand, Bharuch, Surat, Junagadh, Porbandar and Gir Somnath districts- were shut for traffic movement, an official statement said.

As incessant rains have disrupted normal lives of people due to overflowing of rivers, rescue operations are underway in Chhattisgarh's Sukma to evacuate netizens to safer places, an official said on Friday.

"A flood-like situation has been created here due to incessant heavy rainfall for the last eight to nine days. All arrangements are in place and forces are on standby to carry out rescue operations. We will shift people to a shelter if the water level rises further. The affected people are being provided with food by the gram panchayat," said Prateek Chaturvedi, Sub Divisional Officer of Police of Sukhma.

Telangana: Hundreds shifted to safer places following heavy rains

Hundreds of people have been shifted to safer places in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district in Telangana following heavy rains, even as relief works got
underway on Friday in other affected areas of the state. The water level in Godavari river in the temple town of Bhadrachalam (in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district) was flowing above the danger level of 53 feet and stood at 54.90 feet at 1 pm, officials said.

According to official data, Karakagudem in Bhadradri- Kothagudem district and Venkatapuram in Mulugu district received (from 8.30 AM on August 20 to 7 AM on August 21) very heavy rainfall of 172.8 mm and 127 mm respectively.

Several other areas in the state received heavy to moderate rains. Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar, who visited the overflowing Munneru rivulet at Khammam, said residents of low lying areas in Khammam and Bhadradri-Kothagudem districts have been shifted to safer places and provided with food and
others, according to an official release.
He directed the officials to be on alert and continue relief operations till the flood waters receded. Meanwhile, relief works continued in Warangal, where
several areas have been inundated following heavy rains this week.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday predicted light to moderate rain in parts of Himachal Pradesh and said that landslides may occur in the Shimla and Solan districts.

"Light to moderate rain is very likely to continue in the districts of Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur. Visibility will remain less than 500 meters and there is a possibility of landslides in the Shimla and Solan districts," the IMD said.

Amaravati: After showing signs of receding, the flood flow in river Godavari is inching back towards the danger mark on Thursday evening, mainly at upstream Bhadrachalam, due to heavy rains in the catchment area.

This could result in increased inflows into the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowaleswaram in Andhra Pradesh, according to sources.

On the other side, river Krishna is also in full flow, almost filling the Srisailam reservoir to capacity.

With an inflow of 4.17 lakh cusecs, Srisailams storage increased to 211.04 tmc ft, leaving a flood cushion of only 4.77 tmc ft.

Consequently, seven crest gates of the reservoir were opened and 3.84 lakh cusecs of water was being discharged downstream after power generation in the two stations on either banks.

The Nagarjuna Sagar dam downstream was receiving an inflow of 1.69 lakh cusecs till late Thursday evening but the level may increase by Friday morning.

The water flow at Godavari fell to about 43 metres, below the warning level of 45.72 m, at Bhadrachalam in neighbouring Telangana late Wednesday night but the
floodwaters gushed in afresh on Thursday, pushing the level closer to the danger mark at 48.24 m.
